I was assigned the 3-page editorial feature of the GRL PWR magazine and chose Viola Davis, a prominent female figure in the entertainment industry, as the cover star. Having had watched her as Annalise Keating on ABC's "How to Get Away with Murder," I felt that she was perfect subject for the most prominent story in the magazine. Overall, the layout design quite simple to allow the reader to focus on the content without any visual distractions.
I was also responsible for the back cover of the magazine. As we learned in class, in the real world, this is the most expensive placement for an advertisement. Because of this, I wanted to make the ad bold and to have it address the stigma around women and sex. As Naomi Katz explains in Time Magazine, "by speaking honestly, we create a culture that embraces female sexuality without demeaning it, a culture that honours the most basic human desires and the beauty of women’s bodies."
